1998
Yamaha YZF-R1
The original R1 completely redefined the superbike class upon launch — its 998 cc inline-four with a short 360 mm cylinder pitch produced 150 hp in a 177 kg chassis that was as compact as a 600 cc supersport. For the first time, a 1,000 cc motorcycle handled like a 600, and every rival immediately went back to the drawing board.
