Shimano's dominance in cycling components is unparalleled — the company supplies groupsets to the vast majority of the world's best-selling bicycles. Founded in 1921 by Shozaburo Shimano as a freewheel manufacturer in Sakai, Osaka, the company gradually expanded into complete drivetrain systems, pedals, shoes, and fishing equipment. Shimano's index shifting system, introduced in 1985, fundamentally changed cycling by eliminating the need for friction shift skill. Today Shimano operates across road, mountain, trekking, and urban cycling with over 10,000 employees worldwide.
